10,000+ People Demand Federal Government Declare Illicit Fentanyl a Weapon of Mass Destruction
Momentum continues as Families Against Fentanyl Petition to counter national threat surpasses major milestone.
Akron, OH — Today Families Against Fentanyl announced it had surpassed 10,000 signers of its petition asking the United States government to declare illicit fentanyl a Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD).
Fentanyl has been the main driver of a massive surge in overdose deaths in recent years. Even more alarming, its extreme potency gives it the dark potential to be used by terrorists in a chemical attack on American citizens. Declaring fentanyl a WMD would activate an all-of-government response to this national threat, opening up new resources and manpower to tackle this unprecedented danger.
“With 10,000 signers of our petition and more adding their names by the minute, two things are clear: Americans are demanding action against illicit fentanyl, and momentum for our movement to have it declared a Weapon of Mass Destruction is growing,” Families Against Fentanyl founder James Rauh stated. “Tens of thousands of families have been shattered by the loss of a loved one to fentanyl poisoning — mine included. But the risk fentanyl poses is not limited to those suffering from substance use disorder; its capacity to be used as a chemical weapon by those who seek to do harm on a massive scale is too great to be ignored. Declaring illicit fentanyl a WMD would empower government like never before to stop the flow of illicit fentanyl into the United States, enhance penalties for cartels and terrorists trafficking in this poison, and protect the American people from this agent of death.”
The Families Against Fentanyl petition will ultimately be presented to the Biden Administration and the U.S. Congress.
Families Against Fentanyl was founded in 2019 by Akron, Ohio resident James Rauh and his wife Valorie following the untimely death of their son Tom from fentanyl poisoning.
