Ohio Seized Enough Illegal Fentanyl to Kill the Entire State This Year
Families Against Fentanyl Calls for Fentanyl to be Designated a WMD
Akron, OH -- Today, the Governor and Attorney General of Ohio together with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the state of OH has seized 87 pounds of fentanyl this year. Jim Rauh, the cofounder of Families Against Fentanyl responded with the following statement.
"The news that Ohio seized 87 pounds of Fentanyl this year should serve as a wake up call as to how much of this deadly chemical is making its way into our country. Eighty seven pounds of fentanyl is enough to kill the entire population of Ohio," said Rauh. "The threat to American lives is real and massive and our country needs a massive response. We're calling for our leaders to declare illegal fentanyl and synthetic opioids as Weapons of Mass Destruction. Instead of waiting until fentanyl has crossed our borders to begin tackling the problem, a WMD designation would allow the U.S. to go after the foreign, illegal manufacturers of these deadly chemicals that have already taken so many American lives and threaten millions more. How many more families like mine must be hurt before America acts? We hope Ohio's leaders will join us in calling for a WMD designation and take the lead in tackling this threat."
Rauh and his wife Valorie founded Families Against Fentanyl after their son died from fentanyl poisoning in 2015. The Rauhs spent years researching the foreign manufacturers responsible for creating and distributing the deadly chemical and its components. Families Against Fentanyl is fighting for fentanyl and its analogs to be named a Weapon of Mass Destruction and has brought together thousands of families with experts and state and federal leaders. More than 4,000 supporters have signed on to FAF's petition calling for the federal government to designate illicit fentanyl and synthetic opioids as WMDs. The current drug crisis has shown fentanyl, in the hands of criminals, is capable of creating immense destruction in Ohio and across the country.
